Wellbeing that fuels business growth: Building a resilient workplace
As a former expat employee and manager myself, I know how important employee wellbeing can be to the success of organizations.
According to Gallup's 2023 poll, 77% of employees around the world are either actively or "quiet" quitting. The figure is even higher in East Asia, at 83%. Gallup estimates that low engagement costs the global economy 8.8 trillion US dollars and accounts for 9% of global GDP.
Stress levels are at an all-time high, fueled by the pandemic. 44% of employees globally reported feeling stressed, vs. 52% in East Asia.
The good news is while there are several practical realities of the workplace that act as stressors, our experience of stress is determined by how we think about our stressors and respond to them. When employees understand their unique triggers and responses to stress, they can develop greater resilience.
Employee wellbeing, then, is not just a box to tick as a part of corporate strategy, nor is it something that can be achieved with yoga coupons and freebies. When it is treated as a core part of workplace culture, it can be instrumental to growth.
For nearly 10 years prior to qualifying as a certified counselor and founding Therapy Garden, my corporate job focused on understanding human behavior, needs and motivations in different markets across Asia Pacific.
I now work with individuals as well as organizational leaders looking to improve employee wellbeing in a scientific, evidence-based way. My approach to consulting is inspired and informed by my past work experience with clients including Amazon, Unilever, Uber, BAT, Asahi, L’Oréal and IKEA.
